How to Clean Your Oven

Why You Should Clean Your Oven

Hello everyone, Premium Clean is back with more cleaning tips. If you cook frequently then your oven probably has built up grease, grime and food debris. You want to clean your oven frequently for the following reasons.

Fire Hazard - Built up food debris and grime creates a higher risk of fire and smoke.

Contaminated Food - Burnt food stuck to the inside of your oven can actually alter the taste of other foods being cooked. This is especially true for baked goods that are sweet. No one wants there cakes tasting like burnt toast.

How to Self Clean Your Oven

If your oven has the self cleaning option we would always recommend running it though a cycle prior to manually cleaning. The self clean options works in one of two ways:

  1. High heat models will heat the oven between 800 to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. This burns off anything stuck to the inside of the oven. The downside to this technique is that smoke can be created from this process creating a bad odor in your home. We would recommend making sure you have proper ventilations before running this type of self clean.

  2. Steam clean models require you to pour a cup of water in the bottom of the oven then turn on the steam clean mode. The oven will heat itself to around 250 degrees Fahrenheit. The steam will loosen any stuck on grime.

Once you have ran one of the self clean options you will still have to physically clean out the grime from the oven. This can be done by using a wet rag to wipe everything out.

If you oven is still dirty or you didn’t want to use the self clean option for whatever reason you can use an oven cleaner.

How to Use an Oven Cleaner

An oven cleaner is a very strong degreaser. It can be used as a spot cleaner for areas that weren’t removed in the self clean or as a substitute for the self clean. Each product varies a bit but most will be used as follows:

  1. Make sure to properly ventilate your home before use as some oven cleaners have very strong fumes.

  2. Protect the surrounding surfaces near the oven, we usually lay a garbage bag or towel on the floor below the oven.

  3. Spray the oven cleaner and let it sit for the recommended time.

  4. Wipe away the grime and repeat if necessary!

Cleaning your oven doesn’t have to be a huge chore. If you clean frequently then it makes the job much easier. Learn how to clean your stovetop as well to get your oven looking brand new again.
